Variation On the Word Sleep
Margaret Atwood
I would like to watch you sleeping,
which may not happen.
I would like to watch you,
sleeping. I would like to sleep
with you, to enter
your sleep as its smooth dark wave
slides over my head
and walk with you through that lucent
wavering forest of bluegreen leaves
with its watery sun & three moons
towards the cave where you must descend,
towards your worst fear
I would like to give you the silver
branch, the small white flower, the one
word that will protect you
from the grief at the center
of your dream, from the grief
at the center. I would like to follow
you up the long stairway
again & become
the boat that would row you back
carefully, a flame
in two cupped hands
to where your body lies
beside me, and you enter
it as easily as breathing in
I would like to be the air
that inhabits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
& that necessary.
| I Like You When You Are Quiet I like you when you are quiet because it is as though you are absent, and you hear me from far away, and my voice does not touch you. It looks as though your eyes had flown away and it looks as if a kiss had sealed your mouth. Like all things are full of my soul You emerge from the things, full of my soul. Dream butterfly, you look like my soul, and you look like a melancoly word. I like you when you are quiet and it is as though you are distant. It is as though you are complaining, butterfly in lullaby. And you hear me from far away, and my voice does not reach you: let me fall quiet with your own silence. Let me also speak to you with your silence Clear like a lamp, simple like a ring. You are like the night, quiet and constellated. Your silence is of a star, so far away and solitary. I like you when you are quiet because it is as though you are absent. Distant and painful as if you had died. A word then, a smile is enough. And I am happy, happy that it is not true. |
Though I am young, and cannot tell
Though I am young, and cannot tell
Either what Death or Love is well,
Either what Death or Love is well,
Yet I have heard they both bear darts,
Yet I have heard they both bear darts,
And both do aim at human hearts.
And both do aim at human hearts.
And then again, I have been told
And then again, I have been told
Love wounds with heat, as Death with cold;
Love wounds with heat, as Death with cold;
So that I fear they do but bring
So that I fear they do but bring
Extremes to touch, and mean one thing.
As in a ruin we it call
As in a ruin we it call
One thing to be blown up, or fall;
One thing to be blown up, or fall;
Or to our end like way may have
Or to our end like way may have
By a flash of lightning, or a wave;
By a flash of lightning, or a wave;
So Love's inflamèd shaft or brand
So Love's inflamèd shaft or brand
May kill as soon as Death's cold hand;
May kill as soon as Death's cold hand;
Except Love's fires the virtue have
Except Love's fires the virtue have
To fright the frost out of the grave.
To fright the frost out of the grave.
I Don't Remember...
I don't remember, any more,
The exact shape of your hands
As I held them in mine,
Caressed them,
Memorized the length of your fingers,
The depth of your calluses.
I don't remember, any more,
Exactly your height, how much
Taller than me
You were, where
My head rested on your chest
When you held me tightly close.
I don't remember, any more,
Your scent, when we lay together
Creating our own
Magic rhythm,
Matching our heartbeats as we
Touched the sky, together.
I don't remember, any more,
The sound of your voice, calling
My name as though
It were a song
Within itself, a precious treasure
You valued with all your being.
And I don't remember, any more,
The color of your eyes, the shape
Of your lips,
Only...
How your eyes crinkled at the corners
And your laugh, as you told me,
"I love you."
The exact shape of your hands
As I held them in mine,
Caressed them,
Memorized the length of your fingers,
The depth of your calluses.
I don't remember, any more,
Exactly your height, how much
Taller than me
